Tanner, a biological anthropologist, has studied the interactions between human behavior, biological variation, health, and disease ecology. Drawing on methods from both biological and medical anthropology, she has used health and nutrition surveys to understand the impact of disease on childhood growth and the economic and behavioral correlates of infectious disease. She conducted her dissertation research among the Tsimane’ on parasite infections and their links to anthropometric indices of nutritional status. She has continued and expanded this research to focus on mother-child interactions and understanding the causes and consequences of growth stunting.
