McDade received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). He has used the awards to develop and validate minimally-invasive methods to measure physical and mental health in remote populations undergoing cultural and economic transitions. Results have appeared in several articles that make the methodological innovations widely available to other investigators. Two recent NSF awards provide funds for research on culture change and health in the Bolivian Amazon.
